Roady4Roadies 2021 Event Wrap Up

Roady4Roadies 2021 Event Wrap Up

NEWS FLASH... Roady4Roadies 2021 Raises $48,753.66 for Crew Welfare!!!

CrewCare is very pleased and proud to announce taht this year's Roady4Roadies campaign raised a stunning $48,753.66 for Support Act's Crew Fund. This is an incredible result given the funds raised came directly from one of the worse affected sectors in the music industry, our live production industry! It is a credit to these businesses and inviduals who, despite their own hardships caused by COVID, still looked after their colleagues and crew.

This years Roady4Roadies events took place in Adelaide, Brisbane, Central Coast, Darwin, Hobart, Melbourne, Newcastle, Sydney and Townsville on May 11th. Due to cyclonic weather forecast for Perth that day, the event was postponed until June 10th.

ROADY4ROADIES ADELAIDE

A healthy contingent of 155 Croweater Crew convened in Creswell Gardens outside the iconic Adelaide Oval for a brisk walk along the banks of the River Torrens and through the leafy belt of parklands along War Memorial Drive to the Adelaide Entertainment Star Room.   The very diverse group covered all the major event crew companies in Adelaide and the afternoon was a very relaxed chance to meet n mingle with those whom had just worked through a very scaled back Mad March in Adelaide since the closure of all events and gigs in March of 2020.  The entertainment was also very diverse with Pigsy long time crew dude, promoter, singer, songwriter, the joyful Uncle Gilbert providing a lot of great party tunes rounded out by John Schuman and the Vagabond Band who drove home the age range our industry covers.

Special thanks to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, Novatech Creative Event Technology and Adelaide Backline and Production for their contribution.

ROADY4ROADIES BRISBANE

2021 brisbane 1 1200x675

Brisbane turned on a sparkling autumn day as 105 crew hit the road for our annual Roady4Roadies event, turning out early for a walk through the parklands of Brisbane Entertainment Centre ahead of an afternoon of live entertainment to support our roadcrew friends and families.  Local entertainment featured Hussy Hicks, Bec Lavelle, Oskar Campbell & Olivia Ruth on the outdoor stage under the gum trees providing a backdrop for local roadies gathering and connecting for the first time in over a year after their industry was decimated by the pandemic.

Some of our interstate counterparts Roady4Roadies events were hit with cold and rain on their walks in Melbourne & Hobart, whilst the Perth event was postponed due to cyclones! Around the country entertainment was provided by some wonderful musicians showing their support for the crew that gets their show on the road, including Missy Higgins, Mark Seymour, Spy Vs Spy, Monique Brumby and many more.

Thank you to all the supporters – see you next year!

ROADY4ROADIES CENTRAL COAST

2021 central coast 640x360

The Central Coast Roady4Rodies day was the first in our region. It was an amazing day, met by great support from the local community and, big thanks to the Entrance Leagues Club, Lillye, Welter, and Jack Davison, we raised enormous awareness for the well being of crew members.  It really was very humbling to see people (who purchase tickets see the likes of The Rolling Stones, Elton John, U2 and major festivals) understand and donate to our cause. Many are not aware that the people who put these events together work tirelessly to put on a one hour show, often work days, or even weeks prior and after. Thank you Central Coast for taking the time to listen.

ROADY4ROADIES HOBART

Hobart R4R walk was a wonderful day. Starting with a walk lead by Southside Steppers  marching band. Thanks to Tim Jones for this suggestion and organising them to appear. The walk turned into a quick strut as the rain came in. Walkers were greeted with a warm fire and yummy food thanks to our venue The Salty Dog, thank you Mark Wilsdon and Pippa Dickson. The gathering of 80 crew (sold out) were entertained by Hugo Bladel, Monique Brumby, Brian Ritchie trio (4 piece ) + MC duties by Brian Ritchie, Boil up and DJ Jack Careless.

Thank you to Modern Musician and Alive Technologies for supplying production with the master Tim Millikan for looking after sound and Bill Kelly for stage management duties. Big thanks to Zoey McPherson, Ailish McPherson and Zoe Dale  for doing door, merch and raffle.

ROADY4ROADIES MELBOURNE

2021 melbourne 1 1200x675

Despite a very bleak weather forecast, more than 300 people attended Melbourne’s R4R event.  The rain and wind were pretty brutal on the walk from the Palais Theatre along the coastal path to Point Ormond but the crew in attendance all agreed that “there have been many load-ins worse than this”.  The event was attended by all ages with veterans from the industry through to young children and their pet dogs.

Back at The Palais Theatre, the crew was entertained by Shane Jacobson who was the perfect MC for the day having started his career in lighting and a longtime friend of many of the crew.  While the BBQ and coffee van helped to warm those returning from their walk, Shane chatted with Luke O’Connor from Support Act about how the organisation assists music workers.  Many laughs followed when Shane invited the cast of The Roadie Show up to have a chat and needless to say he had a hard time getting the mic off them.

The first musical act to perform was Davey Lane who’s sly nod to Spinal Tap was a very fitting inclusion to his solo set and the audience loved seeing one of Australia’s greatest guitarists up close. Next to grace the stage was the Aussie Music Legend Mark Seymour and Cam McKenzie who played hits including Throw Your Arms Around Me to the delight of many fans.  Finishing up the bill was the amazing Missy Higgins accompanied by Cam Deyell who sang her latest single about Melbourne’s prolonged 2020 lockdown and spoke with heartfelt passion about how deeply she understood the toll this had taken on so many of the crew.

The day couldn’t have happened without the generous donation of time and goods by all that volunteered on the day including -  Midnight (Alan Eno), Jo Gibbons, Claire Nicols, Larry Ponting, Richie Robinson, Paul McCarthy, Kath Millar, Kelli Reynolds, Christian Blasczyk, Serena Down, Box Hill TAFE students (Abbie, Jayden and Audrey), Alex Hasker, The McKinnon family (Karen, Lainey and Emma), The Palais Theatre and Live Nation, The Palms at Crown, Tana Douglas, Stuart Coupe, Mick Newton - A Day on the Green, Deluxe Audio, Roadsick Apparel, Sam Conti from The Catering Company, Dale Chubb from Truckload Australia who helped with freight nationally and the local CrewCare Board (CR, Macca, Kait and Trogg) with special mention to CrewCare’s Sharyn Moran who was here down south on holidays but generously helped to get everyone checked in.

 ROADY4ROADIES NEWCASTLE

2021 newcastle 1 1200x675

Our late afternoon event started with a flurry of activity from the Lizottes staff to flip the venue from a lunchtime event to our jam-packed evening full of old school and emerging rockstars. Whilst they were working hard around 50 of us were walking…..leisurely around the beautiful Lambton Park turning many a head as a small sea of black strolled around the outskirts.

Once clearance was given, 140 of us descended on Lizottes for dinner and some music kicked off a local favourite and a purveyor of fine cheese Justin Ngariki followed by a short “This is my Life” by Terry Galvin one of our crew providers here in the Hunter. This then led into a set by Giant who fille the room with some blues rock.

We then welcomed another local and very talented musician in Amy Vee who spoke about her other passion, mental health and how it effects our industry.

What came next were Osprey, youngsters in the area who continued the rock on stage before handing over the reimagined lineup of SpyVSpy who are back onstage with new material but the same hardcore style.

It was a great night where the worlds of theatre met with rock and roll, plus a variety of ring ins of all ages. Massive shout out to Lizottes for allowing us to use their venue and supplying us with staff and raffle prizes. Also, thanks to Karin Grant and Phil Campbell for managing the FOH side of things and to all the local theatre companies and businesses that provided prizes for our raffles.

ROADY4ROADIES PERTH

2021 perth 1 1200x675

ROADY4ROADIES PERTH

After a postponed R4R in perth due to massive storm we moved the Perth event indoors, with the help of James Leggie and his team at the Freo Social Club. On a cold winters night our R4R group of 90 were entertained by our wonderful MC Narelle Belle (the Australian Karen Carperter show), the welcome to country and blessings with great didgeridoo from Phil Wally Stack (our favourite noonga). Noah Young entertained us with his awesome musical talent and Matt Gresham blew everyone away. A massive Thankyou to Lisa Samaha (CCP/TBS) whom arranged most things on the evening and the Freo Social Club for the great food, drink and their support for Roadies in this state.

ROADY4ROADIES SYDNEY

2021 sydney 1 1200x675

The Sydney leg of R4R was a crackin success, Addison Road Community Centre in Marrickville was the ideal setting for a rock n roll gathering, a great place to make some noise (Mina Bui Jones + Mark Mordue made our day at Addi Road so easy), big shout out to the awesome talent who supported us on the day, the guys from Old Dog New Tricks (Buzz + Ben + Dean + Mark) with a special appearance by Ollie Bailey which brought the house down, Ben Ransom, John Kennedy and the 68 Comeback Special (John Kennedy + Murray Cook + Richard Burgman + Phil Hall) all stage managed perfectly by our dear friend, Falcon (Matthew Mifsud).

Support Act CEO Clive Miller delivered a heartfelt speech expressing the continued support from Support Act and CrewCare and the services and grants available to our people through these challenging times as we navigate the transition post this pandemic to the 130 gathered.

To make the gig a success, we could not have done it without these awesome, selfless people who need so much more recognition than a few words, Garry Brokenshire (Backline Australia), Frank Madzin (Madzin Productions), Pat Fegan for keeping us safe, Splashdown and Class Occasion Hire.

No one went hungry, delicious offerings by our friends at Hard Rock Cafe and Bayleaf Tour Catering, we can’t thank our volunteers enough for their valuable contribution on the day, you know who you are, THANK YOU!

 ROADY4ROADIES TOWNSVILLE

2021 townsville 1 1200x675

The Townsville Roady4Roadies event went off as a great success, being the first time North Qld has joined the national R4R events.  There isn't a big crew industry in Townsville and what was two years ago has been well and truly diminished by covid with the drop in touring shows, however there were 40 of us who attended on the evening.

The Townsville event was held indoors and was hosted by CrewCare Member Jeff Jimmieson and his band  the GodFathers of Funk at Flynn's Irish bar in Townsville.   A good representation of local music industry people and crew had a great time into the wee hours.  Pre gig snacks were provided and publican Steve Flynn - a great supporter of live music - picked up the bar tab for the night.
Our R4R event started at 8pm in a closed section of the pub and then the general public were allowed into the venue for the band gig - where further CrewCare merch was sold.   The night raised over $1200 for the cause.

We are looking forward to a bigger and better event in 2022.

Roady4Roadies was staged by a voluntary team of Australia’s leading live production personnel and industry professionals.

Support Act CEO, Clive Miller, said "Support Act adds its thanks and congratulations to all involved with the Roady4Roadies event. The funds raised will enable us to continue providing crisis relief services to those in need, whether it is paying the rent, facilitating access to housing, assisting with medical needs, or the many other physical or mental challenges that road crew sometimes confront. We are here for crew and feel privileged to have been part of this great initiative."
